Babes of MMA Sponsored Fighter Jessamyn Duke Ready to Rumble at Invicta FC 5

Fighter babe Jessamyn "The Gun" Duke (2-0) returns to the Invicta FC cage this Friday to rumble with Miriam Nakamoto (1-0). Babes of MMA recently caught up with our newest sponsored fighter Jessamyn Duke prior to the cage doors shutting for the interview below.

How have you been and what's new since we last interviewed you?

-I certainly can’t complain. I’ve been living my dream to the fullest capacity since my last interview with you! My days are filled with training, teaching, and travelling to new places and new gyms getting incredible experiences that are helping me grow as an MMA fighter.

Tell us about your upcoming fight, who you are fighting and where?

-I’ll be fighting on Invicta FC 5, April 5th, at the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, MO. My opponent is Miriam Nakamoto who is 1-0 in MMA but is an extremely seasoned and dangerous Muay Thai fighter. I said it when my fight was announced and will say it again, but I don’t think the judges are going to be needed in this fight. We are both aggressively styled fighters who love finishing fights.

All the female fighters under the Invicta FC banner rave about it. How has your experience with Invicta been so far?

-Well, I can tell you that they are definitely worthy of all the praise. Not only have they provided an incredible platform for females MMA fighters to compete on and showcase their skills, they’ve truly made it possible for fighters like myself to treat this as a full time job and focus on fighting as a career. When you do that, the standard of training and expectations rise across the board and that is why Invicta has been so successful at developing the women’s divisions and the skill level of female fighters overall.

How was this training camp and did you get to train with anyone special?

-Since signing my contract to fight at IFC 5 I’ve travelled to Minnesota to train with Kaitlin Young, and just recently got back from L.A. to train at Glendale Fighting Club with Ronda Rousey and her team, as well as Eddie Bravo who’s currently teaching out of Tapout Gym. As far as the training out of my home base at the AFS Academy, it couldn’t have been going better. My team is super pumped about my fight as usual and the energy in training is second to none. Even since my last fight at IFC 3 I’ve made HUGE improvements to all aspects of my game!

How did you get your fight nickname “The Gun”?

-In our gym it’s tradition that our coach gives the fighters their nicknames. I ended up with the gun because of my last name. So, everyone knows that John Wayne is known as the Duke. But a lot of people don’t know that the boxer Tommy Morrison is the nephew of John Wayne. In Rocky IV he played Tommy “The Machine” Gunn. So, my coach felt that since my last name was Duke that it was appropriate that my nickname be “The Gun” because of this connection. At first, I wasn’t sure I liked it, but honestly it’s really grown on me. I feel like I’ve kind of embodied it a bit.

Do you have any fight day rituals or superstitions?

-I’m not very superstitious. I prefer to think that I’m the one in control of my fate rather than having it depend on certain things happening. Because anyone that fights will tell you those things very rarely go as smoothly as you hope. It’s important not to over complicate fight day. You are simply there to do what you’ve trained for. The environment changes, but the job doesn’t.

Any predictions on how you see your upcoming fight unfolding?

-One of the things that makes MMA so exciting is the fact that you just never know what’s going to happen once the fight actually starts. Game plans are great, and I certainly have one, but truthfully, it’s really hard to say just how things will unfold. However, I’ll say this; I plan on serving Miriam her first professional loss and walking out of the Invicta FC cage as 3-0.

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be and why?

-No one in particular. My goals in this sport are to one day be considered the very best on the planet. So, my dream fight would be the one that solidifies me as just that. Whoever, and whenever that may be.

What is your greatest achievement or proudest moment in your fighting career so far?

-Successfully making my pro debut at Invicta FC 2. Not only was I fortunate enough to debut with such an amazing organization, I had an exciting fight against a very tough opponent and came out victorious with a finish.

With the recent big announcement from UFC that TUF 18 will feature ladies bantamweights, will you be trying out?

-Right now, my focus is entirely on IFC 5 and what I need to do on April 5th. Just like every fighter that is eligible for tryouts, it’s definitely on my mind, but I’m not committing to any decisions about it until after my fight.

Any shout outs you would like to make?

-My coach, Scott Elliott, and all of my friends and teammates at the AFS Academy for helping me become the fighter I am today! My family for their support and devotion to helping me become the best fighter in the world. My manager Brett Atchley of ASMM and of course all my amazing sponsors who help make it possible for me to make this a full time job: Polanti Watches, VII AD, Babes of MMA, Outlaw Fight Gear, KLENCH Mouthguards, Horse Power Strength & Conditioning, Intimidation, Dr. Taverni, Hype X-treme, Combatives Gear, Fight Soap, and SWOLE Nutrition!

Thank you very much for your time, proud to be a sponsor and good luck on fight night Jessamyn! For the latest on Jessamyn Duke stop by her websiteFacebook and Twitter pages.

Fighter Babe Amberlynn Orr Returns to the Cage this Saturday

Fighter babe Amberlynn Orr (5-1) steps back in the cage this Saturday for a flyweight title fight against Miki Rogers (3-0) at V3Fights in Memphis, Tennessee at Minglewood Hall. We recently caught up with Amberlynn prior to her big fight for the interview below.

How did you get involved in MMA and how long have you been training?

-I was really just looking for a better workout, something to keep me active and more physical since I was no longer involved in rugby. A friend of mine, at the time, told me about Bang Gym so I decided to try it out and fell in love! December 3, 2010 was the day I was hooked!

Where are you currently training, and what’s a typical training week like for you?

-From day one I have always trained with Fishers Bang Gym in Horn Lake, Mississippi. A top level gym with a lot of great talent! I don’t care to cross train with any other gyms at this time because I’m still learning new things each day and have a very strong loyal relationship to my gym and team! Although I just recently came back from a MMA fighters training camp in Dallas, Texas working with the RCJ Machado Group, that’s the only other gym I’ve ever been to. Our gym is also an affiliate of RCJ Machado (Carlos Machado)!

Tell us about your upcoming fight, who you’re fighting and where?

-With a record of 5-1 I will be fighting and undefeated opponent Miki Rogers from Alan Belcher’s MMA on April 6th for my first title at 125 lbs! I’m very excited for this fight! Especially for it being my first championship fight and it will be a televised event! I’m ready to put on a show for the fans and give it everything I got! I’m a fighter for a reason and it’s time to shine!

What is your best experience as a fighter? What is your worst?

-This is such a hard question to answer! I’d have to say it’s all one thing actually. Not sure if you would call it an experience but it’s kind of a love hate relationship, cutting weight. The more and more I do it the easier it gets in a sense. It also helps me mentally and I use it to my advantage. Once I get in that mode, I know I’ve got a goal to accomplish, with a deadline, its set in my head what I’ve got to do. All the will power and self control it takes do so, that helps me in my training which ultimately helps me in my fights. Knowing I can accomplish something that takes so much effort and hard work!

What advice would you give to other women who are reading this interview and want to get started in MMA?

-Don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you want to do!! Nothing is unrealistic as long as you believe in yourself! Strive for greatness!

What are some of the hurdles that you think Women in MMA need to overcome before Women’s MMA will be considered a top level sport like Men’s MMA is today?

-I believe that it’s already unraveling now. It’s just a matter of time before it will be accepted. The generation we live in now is growing into the MMA world, starting young with Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, boys and girls. So I think once our generation gets older it will all be viewed the same.

What or who are your inspirations in MMA and life?

-My team, gym, family and supporters all push me and help me strive to become better as a person and martial artist. All my kids in Karate, who look up to me and help me, they teach me in so many ways each day and they are all my inspirations!

Who are your favorite MMA fighters?

-Fav MMA fighters, hmmm. Another tough question! Lol. Of course the typical Ronda Rousey and everything she’s done for the WMMA community. Thomas “The Die Hard Kidd” Vasquez at 135 lbs. He’s an up and coming pro fighter everyone should keep their eye out for! You’ll be seeing a lot of him in the near future. Everyone at my gym, no matter your color, race, gender, I respect everyone who steps in that cage and dedicates themselves to what they love!

How do you enjoy your free time when not training or fighting?

-I’m such a clean freak it’s unbelievable! And I love to cook! While I’m dieting for my fights, I’m constantly looking up new recipes and dishes to make as soon as I can eat again! Haha. I know I know what a dork! But I’m an independent fighting, cooking, cleaning female who can make the best meal or sammich you could ask for! ;) And really just anything I can do to relax considering I work at a police department on a full time schedule working and training. Not much time for anything else.

Any future plans or dreams?

-I’m currently working at a police station right now as a dispatcher just waiting until the time comes that I can go to the academy to become an officer! Aside from my MMA career I’ve always believed in having a backup plan and I think the two go hand in hand to a certain extent.

Any shout outs you would like to make?

-Gotta stay reppin Fishers Bang Gym, Team Torment, Martial Arts Life Apparel, RCJ Machado Jiu-Jitsu and Rupert Yen Photography. All these people support me to the fullest and I couldn’t appreciate it enough!

Thank you for your time and good luck on fight night Amberlynn! For more on Amberlynn or to send her a shout out please visit her fan page on Facebook.

Fighter Babe Jasminka Cive Returns to the Cage this Friday

Fighter babe Jasminka Cive (5-0) brings her undefeated record to Invicta FC this Friday in a tussle with Australian fighter Bec Hyatt (4-2). We recently caught up with Jasminka prior to her fight for the interview below.

How did you get involved in MMA and how long have you been training?

-The first time that I got involved with MMA was with a job as a referee. I liked it so much that I decided to try it myself and only six week later I got my first MMA fight in Vienna back in May of 2010.

Where are you currently training, and what's a typical training week like for you?

-I am training in my home city of Linz in Austria at my own school and team which has the name “CiWi”. It’s a combination of my last name (Cive) and my fiancé’s first (Willi). Right now I train eight times a week. I have my own BJJ and Muay Thai instructor and on two days of the week I take separate wrestling lessons. Other than that we do MMA classes.

Tell us about your upcoming fight, who you're fighting and where?

-My next fight will be at Invicta FC 5 in Kansas City and I will be fighting Bec Hyatt from Australia.

What is your best experience as a fighter? What is your worst?

-I would say every fight that I had was a unique experience and no one was the best or worst. I love to fight no matter where, which style and which opponent. I fought Muay Thai and kickboxing before, but I love MMA.

What advice would you give to other women who are reading this interview and want to get started in MMA?

-My advice for all girls who would like to start with MMA is: just do it as soon as possible, you will find a new true love! And don’t get discouraged, just keep going and you will see that you can do it. Girls are taking over ;-)

What are some of the hurdles that you think Women in MMA need to overcome before Women's MMA will be considered a top level sport like Men's MMA is today?

-WMMA needs more promotions like Invicta FC but also in Europe who would bring the best MMA ladies into the cage. Some more media and presswork also would be great because we need to educate people that it’s not a male only sport.

What or who are your inspirations in MMA and life?

-My inspiration in my life and my sport is my father, he was an officer in the Serbian Army and I always wanted to get so strong like he was.

Who are your favorite MMA fighters?

-I love Anderson Silva and Fedor Emelianenko and the ladies which I love to watch are Cris Cyborg and Joanne Calderwood! I would love to train with them one day. I respect them very much.

How do you enjoy your free time when not training or fighting?

-Free time??? What is that, lol? I don’t have a lot of that, but when I don’t fight or train I promote my own event here in Austria called Mix Fight Night www.mixfight.at. It’s one of the best and one of the biggest events here in Austria in the whole German speaking area. My next one will start on March 30th; my fiancé will fight there as well. I also have a little puppy, his name is “Hope” and he is my hobby that helps me relax. He is like my son ;-) haha

Of course we have a few questions for the male readership as well.

Are you single?

-I am affianced with another MMA fighter, Willi Ott.

What are your turn-ons?

-I love sporty men so to speak, that are in shape. Also important is that they behave well, friendly and show discipline in other areas of life. Those are characteristics I like.

What are your turnoffs?

-Turnoffs would be dumb, unfriendly guys that don’t show any respect to me or others. And as well hairy people, that don’t care for themselves or their body.

What would you say is your best feature?

-My muscles. Haha :)

Any future plans or dreams?

-I would love to live my life like it is; keep on doing the sport as long as possible. I live in love with Muay Thai and MMA so to speak. It’s kind of my life-credo. Hopefully it keeps on for awhile. I also want to grow as a fighter and a promoter.

Any shout outs you would like to make?

-To all fans and (W)MMA supporters: Support our sport wherever you can, your vote could make the difference and our dreams come true!!! Thank you to my sponsors, Phantom MMA and Tussle Fight Gear, especially my friend Slade Bittler. Also a big thanks to Germanys number one fight site Groundandpound.de that supports me all the time and thanks to Invicta FC that made my dream come true to fight for them.

Thank you for the interview Jasminka and good luck on fight night! For more on Jasminka stop by her Facebook and Twitter pages as well as her own promoted event at Mix Fight Night.
